Nothing Like A Beach Holiday To Motivate #beachbodymotivation #whoswithme

Okay, so it wasn’t that long ago that I posted about Brent winning 2 free tickets anywhere West Jet flies. We did find a week that we thought would work and decided we’d take the opportunity to spend it at Paradise Village, celebrating our {10th} anniversary where we honeymooned almost exactly 10 years ago. {We honeymooned 6 months after our wedding. Best. Decision. Ever.}

I was working through the idea of not taking our kids, and was actually starting to get excited about the trip. The kids, although bummed to not be coming, understood and were excited about the prospect of saving and planning one as a family. And I realized I wanted to wear a bikini again.

So something has to change.

Going Vegan? I can talk all I want about it, but it’s just not going to happen. I’m not committed enough to the lifestyle and honestly enjoy meat and cheese as part of my diet.

Going Vegetarian? I could honestly be 80% vegetarian, but find myself not fully committed to making it a serious way of life, so it never flies.

Going Gluten Free? BINGO. I’ve gone gluten free before and had great success, not only in how I looked but how I felt. And quickly too.

It’s like a light switch went off – I just stopped eating it. For 6 days now I’ve been making food choices reflective of this and I’m already feeling better. I’ll also be adding in some workouts of course, but this is the first step.

Now, we aren’t likely going on a beach vacay like we had planned because Brent can’t get that week off {the ONE week we had to work with}, so it may end up being a San Francisco weekend after all. But I’m still motivated…it’s high time I got my act together and made choices to be my best self.

While I don’t believe in comparing ourselves to others – we really are shaped differently – here are some photos I have pinned on my Beach Body Motivation board. It’s not about comparing – it’s about inspiring….

The Prize That Isn’t

So here’s the deal.

Brent was home sick Monday and Tuesday of this week. He didn’t even know he qualified for the contest, which made the win even sweeter. A coworker called him at home Tuesday night and spread the great news that he had won. What, you may ask?

TWO TICKETS ANYWHERE WESTJET FLIES!

Seriously, how amazing is that!?

And our planning began. Having wanted to take a fabulous family vacay – let the kids experience a tropical beach and develop a love for palm trees like their mama {they better} – we got thinking.

barcelomayabeach

Barcelo Maya Beach Resort

Ever since we went to the Barcelo Maya Beach in the Mayan Riviera {2011} we have been DYING to take the kids there. It’s seriously an amazing resort and we have nothing but positive things to say. Our trip was spectacular – and while I believe every couple with kids should take at least 1 kidless vacation, I am also a big believer in taking vacations WITH our kids. And since we’ve taken one without them, we figure it’s high time to take them along.

So, option #1: Barcelo Maya Beach – Destined to be an amazing holiday!

Option #2: Hawaii – Because Hawaii doesn’t have all inclusives and has a few excursions we definitely want to do {Dolphin Excursions, Pearl Harbour, and Polynesian Cultural Center for example} which add to the cost of the trip, we felt this would be a trip we aren’t likely to take too soon on our own. So with two flights free off the top, it opens up the opportunity to do more things {excursions for 4 people are not cheap}. This was a high candidate. And I was already dreaming of swimming with the dolphins {in the wild!!!} with the kids.

koolina

Ko Olina Beach Villas Resort

Having heard amazing things about the Ko Olina Beach Villas Resort, I thought it would be AH-MAZING to stay there. I know, the dream just kept getting bigger.

Another perk to flying West Jet with this prize is their annual Halloween promotion – where those with halloween birthdays or last names halloween related {black, orange, etc} receive a free flight that day. I am a halloween baby, so we tentatively planned to fly out on my birthday, adding one more half free flight. If it would work for this. *perks*

Then the bomb dropped…These flight vouchers expire JUNE 30TH, 2013! Yep, 3 months away.

Why, you may ask? Well, it’ s pretty apparent someone {NOT WestJet} has been holding them for the past year. Since June 2012…and it is not extendable {is that a word?}.

**cue stress**

Here are the problems….

1. Neither of us has more vacation time to work with right now…not in the next 3 months…fall would have been perfect

2. In the past 4 months Brent has had 1 coworker go on mat leave, 3 quit, and 1 announce a pregnancy. So, as you can imagine, getting time off RIGHT NOW is not super ideal.

3. It doesn’t leave us a lot of time for financial planning either. Even with the free flights, it’s AT LEAST $3,000. And that’s being SUPER skimpy. Plus, we need a new roof, eavestroughs, and furnace this summer….

4. We really wanted to maximize the opportunity and go for 2 weeks, but as a result of the reasons above it’s not even kind of a possibility.

AND – there’s a whole slew of dates the voucher does not allow travel during: March 28th-April 2nd, May 16th-21st, and June 27th-July 2nd.

Yep.

Oh, AND June is completely out because of dance recitals and the end of the year school concert.

So now we are trying to figure out something else….my parents have a timeshare in Puerto Vallarta at Paradise Village {where we spent our honeymoon 10 years ago} and they have generously offered to let us use it this year. My parents rock!

But even still….do we want to spend the money now when we have all these expenses coming up? Or do we, instead, want to be responsible and scale back the dream?

Scale back on the FAMILY vacation?

radisson fishermans wharf

Radisson Fisherman’s Wharf

Maybe it’s a husband/wife getaway instead…Arizona?   Texas? ooo, San Francisco? I’ve always wanted to go there with just Brent, since the kids and I went in 2010 with my cousin and her son. It would be awesome. But the flights are fairly inexpensive {$700 for two flights} and I’d like to get the most out of these vouchers instead. So now we are back to the mexico thing….a quick 4-5 day husband/wife trip.

paradise village

Paradise Village Resort

And if we go to Paradise Village, we’ll be there nearly exactly 10 years after going there for our honeymoon. And I LOVE that. And I love being with my husband – but I want the kids to come too. And I want to anticipate and save with them for the next 6+ months and enjoy a fabulous 2 week vacay in the fall. And I just want it to turn out how we originally planned. lol

I know I sound ungrateful…and I don’t mean to be. Receiving two free flights anywhere West Jet flies is HUGE – and SO exciting. And we are THRILLED. But with this expiry issue I am feeling REALLY overwhelmed and stressed out.

What would you do? {we can’t sell or transfer the vouchers}. Where would you go?

**Disclosure: Westjet has NO idea who I am. This voucher was neither gifted nor held by them.

I do not hold them responsible and look forward to flying with them soon. **

Yep, Still Sewing #makingmemories #brothercanada

I am nearing end of the loan period for the Dreamweaver XE that was sent to me by Brother Canada. And honestly,

I DON’T WANNA GIVE IT BACK!  **Stomps Foot**

And also, my friends and I are sewing the crap out of it – and loving every minute. We have already made embroidered shirts, 3 dresses, 1 skirt1 appliqued shirt, bound a quilt, and are currently in the middle of quilting another small quilt. PLUS – There are about 3 other quilts planned for this machine {assuming I’m able to keep it forever a wee bit longer}, more skirts, ties for the boys, and of course – some clothes for Brooklyn’s American Girl doll. Not to mention the projects we add to our list on a daily basis.

We need help.

Actually, when Brent and I win the lottery {lots of pipe dreams in this head}, I plan to turn our current home into a sewing retreat…set up with all you’d need. Seriously, wouldn’t that be AWESOME!!! And then I would invite, Merrick, Leanne, and Maggie out for some incredible sewing fun!  *Swoon*

Somebody stop me – I’m giddy as though that dream is already happening. Sigh

Okay, back to the real point of this post…..our latest project is quilting a baby quilt. My friend’s mother in law put the top together and then stopped. So we {ie my friends and I} have the fun task of quilting it together and binding it. And yes, we are making her do it – part of learning this machine is seeing how easy it is for others as well. There is a learning curve with a machine of this magnitude – and so far we are all doing just swell. This friend of mine is not a regular sewer – it’s not something she is normally comfortable with, but she is doing great. Using a technique called *stitch in the ditch*, she is quilting this together like a pro! And gaining confidence as she does. Win/Win! And as an added bonus, I just picked up the actual *stitch in the ditch* foot, to see how it improves the ease of this technique. I mean, I can’t be the only one who wonders if all the different *feet* are necessary {so far, just for the record, my opinion is YES! More on that another time}.

Here’s the start:

It’s almost completed…photos to follow!

Everyone Loves The Duck #donaldduck #brothercanada

Another fabulous embroidery project from the Dreamweaver XE – next week will be full of sewing, so there will be even more things to share. PLUS, I’ll begin my review of this machine!

This One’s For The Boys! #makingmemories #disney #brothercanada

One thing I know from my accessory making days, is that boy items are LIMITED. There just isn’t that much out there for the little guys, so it’s especially fun to be able to make something *boyish*.

Jonah’s been begging me for a shirt to match the pyjama bottoms I made him for Christmas, and this was the perfect opportunity.

He is THRILLED!

IMG_7950

And he felt the need to present his jammie bottoms in a yoga pose. lol

{despite the way it looks, our floor is not crooked}

And a closeup just so you can see how incredible and detailed this machine is. We are all smitten with the Dreamweaver XE from Brother. So much fun to be had!

Incredible, no?

We also did another shirt exactly like this for my friend’s son, as well as a Donald Duck for another friend’s son.

Photos of Donald Duck to come. :)

Disclosure: I was sent the Dreamweaver XE from Brother Canada for review purposes. I have this machine on loan {though dream about keeping it of course} and am going to make as many projects as possible to maximize my time and experience.

Sewing Day 3 #brothercanada #disney #makingmemories

Well another sewing day is behind us. And another few projects are completed!

Wanna see what we made? Here’s a rough version of the photos as I need to take better shots tomorrow, but nevertheless, here are the projects we did today:

IMG_7939

Just something small for Brooklyn since the remainder of my tshirt projects are for Jonah {oops}. I really love the simplicity of the sailboat and the fun of the contrasting colours.

IMG_7943

YAY – finally something for the boys. A friend of mind made this guitar shirt for her son. He chose the fabrics and she made the magic happen with the fabulous Dreamweaver XE!

And perhaps the most exciting project of the day – REALLY having fun with the embroidery. It was nothing short of amazing to see this machine in action!

IMG_7947

Can’t wait to do more! Onto some more tshirts for the boys.

Stay tuned!

Brother DreamWeaver XE – Some Goodies #brothercanada #disney #makingmemories

If you are a follower on my Facebook page, you already know I have HUGE news! HA-UGE!

Brother Canada contacted me a few weeks ago offering their new Dreamweaver XE {sewing, quilting, and embroidery machine} for review – I KNOW! – I nearly peed my pants too! I could not believe it and honestly squealed with delight for days. But also tried to reign in the excitement *just in case* it didn’t happen.

And then the Purolator truck parked outside my house.

I may have genuinely jumped for joy and squealed with delight with my friend who was over. And immediately opened the door in anticipation.

But he didn’t give me a sewing machine. #bummer

Until he did.

He gave me a smaller backorder package from a completely unrelated order and another larger box with *I had no idea what* in it. So I mentioned that I had been so anxious because of a sewing machine I was waiting for and that’s when it clicked. He said *Oh wait, I do have one of those for you*

HOLY HANNAH IT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING!!!!!

dreaweaver xe

And this thing is a monster – a beast…..and a BEAUTY! I’ll go into further details for review purposes, but for now, let’s look at a few projects that have been created on this gorgeous machine that has made it’s temporary home in my kitchen {temporary – yes they want it back…I know, totally rude….such a tease! lol}.

Project #1 {let’s play with embroidery}:

Minnie Mouse

Project #2 {let’s play with quilting}:

IMG_7931

This binding for this gorgeous quilt was done on this machine. The *body* of the

quilt was done on a Laura Ashley Brother Quilting Machine!

Project #3 {let’s play again with embroidery…and some sewing}:

Minnie Mouse Bag

And the inside {because even Minnie Mouse can be a little sassy sometimes}:

IMG_7933

And, finally, Project #4 {let’s make a dress}:

Sorry it’s a bit fuzzy

Adorable pillowcase dress pattern from ViolaLee Patterns on Etsy.

And we have no plans for stopping. These were just the first two days of testing this out. We have quilts and appliques and more embroidery…more sewing, and tons more FUN!!!!

Stay tuned – this Dreamweaver XE will be well loved!

It’s The New Cool ~ Geekie

Gone are the days of this:

steve urkel

Though let’s be honest – we all loved him!

But seriously – this version of Geekie didn’t last long, nor was it *COOL*. We all loved Steve Urkel, but nobody really wanted to look like him {except maybe as Stefan? Oh come on, you were smitten}.

Well, there’s a new Geekie in town and everyone’s gonna want it! I know I do – and my kids, LOVE their new shirts. In fact, Jonah giggles all day any time he wears his.

IMG_7838

Tickle Me Calculator and Cool and Sweet Ice Cream Treat

{from the website} Geekie is a children’s clothing company that empowers the importance and awareness of education and individuality. Our focus is to encourage kids of all ages to embrace their inner Geek. From the little girl that sits in the front of the class answering all the questions, to the athlete who stays in the gym a little longer. They all have that willingness to be the best at whatever they set their minds to. Our aim is to show that even the smartest kid can be the most popular, the best athlete could have the best GPA, and the word Geek is synonymous with the word cool.  Our designs emulate the same frame of mind. The Tshirts give off a positive attitude with enlightened colors and a fun and playful geekie feel.

I told them to do Geekie faces and this is what I got. Ha!

IMG_7840

Ah, nice smiles….though can you see the wet hair spot on the wall behind? lol

IMG_7841

I adore Brooklyn’s popsicle {revello-esque} shirt – it’s simple and classic and totally adorable – not to mention completely *cool* and *sweet*. And I mean really, a tickle me calculator? LOVE.

Jonah loves it too!

IMG_7843

With a better future in mind, we aspire for the next generation to stay Different, and be Geekie!

~For the Geek in all us

*Disclosure: I was sent the shirts pictured above for my children at no cost, to facilitate this review.

But, as always, all opinions are my 100% my own!*

It’s Quilting Time…

In the next few weeks I will be taking on another large sewing project….this time another quilt. But not like the memory quilt I made my mother in law, a quilted quilt…..lol

And I am so excited!

I toyed around with the idea of making one for our bed, but the truth is, I am SO undecided on what our colour scheme will be and what I want the overall look to be, I think the planning would be more stressful than the quilting. Not a good combination for my first one.

So I’ve settled on making one for Brooklyn’s room, which has plans to be a beachy themed room {Jonah’s too}. And I want bright, happy colours. Which is why, when I saw this quilt and immediately smiled, I KNEW it was the ONE.

This Mango Tango quilt from All People Quilt {thanks Pinterest for bringing us together} is perfect.
